The Sugar Bowl, In Style

The Sugar Bowl is a 75-year-old New Orleans tradition enjoyed by locals and visitors – who travel from all over the country. The Sugar Bowl is an American college football bowl game, the second oldest bowl game in the country, along with the Orange Bowl and the Sun Bowl. (The Rose Bowl is the country’s oldest bowl game.)

Colonel James M. Thomson, who published the New Orleans Item, and the paper’s Sports Editor, Fred Digby, first suggested the idea of a New Year’s Day football game in 1927. By 1935, they gained enough support to hold the first Sugar Bowl game.

The game was hosted by Tulane Stadium from its inception through 1975. Subsequently, the Louisiana Superdome took over. Every game since has been played there, with the exception of the 2006 Sugar Bowl; because of the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, the game was held at the Atlanta Dome that year.

The next Sugar Bowl game will be held on January 1, 2010 and will feature the Cincinnati Bearcats vs. the Florida Gators.
